Rainbow Johnson's parents make the decision to leave their hippie commune and relocate to the suburbs to secure a better future for their family. While they face the difficulties that come with this transition, Bow and her siblings experience the ups and downs of attending a conventional school, where they find themselves caught between racial identities, feeling like they don't fully fit in as either black or white.
